Council of Caribbean Engineering Organisations

Annual General Meeting

On Wednesday April 13th 2005 a delegation comprised of the President and Honorary Secretary of the Barbados Association of Professional Engineers as well as Eng. Tony Gibbs attended the Annual General Meeting of the Council of Caribbean Engineering Organisations at UWI St. Augustine.

The Barbados Association of Professional Engineers is pleased to announce that its nomination of Eng. Tony Gibbs for the position of Secretary-General of the Council of Caribbean Engineering Organisations was accepted. Indeed, Eng. Gibbs was unanimously elected to the position..

The Barbados Association of Professional Engineers congratulates Eng. Tony Gibbs on his appointment to this post and wishes him every success in his new position. The BAPE stands willing to offer its support to CCEO and to Secretary-General Gibbs, and looks forward to the continued cooperation of the CCEO as it seeks to deal with the issues associated with the liberalized environment of the CSME, the FTAA and the WTO.

The BAPE also expresses its thanks to outgoing Secretary-General Eng. Professor Dr. Clement Imbert for the work which he has tirelessly undertaken during his tenure and looks forward to his continued support which he so graciously offered at the AGM to his successor.

In his report, outgoing Secretary General, Eng. Professor Dr. Clement Imbert highlighted a number of events that were facilitated by CCEO including the conference on “The 2004 Hurricane Season – Implications for Structural Engineering Practice in the Caribbean” held at the Caribbean Development Bank on December 13, 2004. This was organised by The Institution of Structural Engineers (Caribbean Division) in collaboration with BAPE, CDB, PAHO, USAID, UWI and CCEO.

Another matter discussed was the issue of regional accreditation of the engineering programmes being undertaken by the colleges and universities across the region. It was agreed that the CCEO should seek to address the accreditation of the associate degrees of engineering disciplines being issued by the colleges across the region.

Eng Gibbs takes over the mantle of leadership at a critical time when the region is on the brink of CSME, FTAA and other issues of globalization and liberalized markets. His knowledge, experience, reputation and professionalism should stand him in a good position to lead the regional engineering profession at this time.
